Boat Insurance Coverage
Boat Insurance provides protection against physical damage losses to the boat, machinery and equipment. This is referred to as Hull Insurance. While the boat insurance industry does not use the terms comprehensive and collision, if you are familiar with these terms for automobile insurance, this would be the equivalent coverage. Each boat insurance company will have a different definition of Hull Insurance. One of the insurance companies that we represent defines it as “accidental, direct physical loss or damage to the boat and equipment as well as salvage charges.” Hull Insurance is broad and may include spars, sails, machinery, furniture, dinghies/tenders, outboard motors, fittings and other equipment normally required for the operation or maintenance of the vessel.

Boat Insurance Basics
What you should know before purchasing boat insurance.

This overview will help you make an informed decision when you're ready to buy boat insurance. Boat insurance programs are normally designed to cover boats up to 26' in overall length. If the size of your vessel is greater than 26 feet, it's generally considered a "yacht", and therefore qualifies for yacht insurance.

Boat insurance provides physical damage coverage to repair your boat if it's accidentally damaged or destroyed by a covered peril such as collision, fire, theft, windstorm, lightning or vandalism. This coverage is broad, and provides coverage for the boat, including its machinery and auxiliary equipment, outboard motors, boat trailer and personal property.

A Boat Insurance policy can provide physical damage coverage on an Actual Cash Value (ACV) or an Agreed Amount Value basis. Both types of boat insurance policies offer important coverages for your boat but there are significant differences.

Actual Cash Value policies pay for Replacement Costs less depreciation at the time of the loss. In the event of a total loss, used boat pricing guides and other resources are used to determine the approximate market value of your vessel. A partial loss is settled by taking the total cost of the repair less a percentage for depreciation.

Agreed Amount Value policies mean you and the insurance company have agreed on the value of your vessel and in the event of a total loss you will be paid that amount. Agreed Amount Value policies also replace old items for new in the event of a partial loss without any deduction for depreciation. Most Agreed Amount Value policies require actual cash value on certain damaged property such as sails, protective covers, batteries, dinghies, trailers and aged outboard motors, lower drive units or outdrives.

Physical Damage coverage is usually subject to a deductible. The boat and motor usually have the same deductible with additional deductibles for the trailer and personal effects. The deductible is the amount you are willing to pay in case of a loss. The higher the deductible, the lower your insurance premium. Boat policy deductibles are usually calculated as a percentage of your coverage (1%, 2%, 3% of the vessel value) or can be on flat amounts of $250 or $500.

A good boat insurance policy should also offer Personal Effects coverage to provide protection for those items not intended for the normal operation of your boat, such as portable TVs, cellular or portable phones, stereos, radios and cameras.
Boat Liability
The Liability section of the policy provides protection if you are legally responsible for damages to property or injury to someone other than yourself or a family member. Boat Insurance liability provides protection if you are sued as a result of hitting another boat, or if someone is hurt onboard your vessel because of your negligence. This coverage is usually offered in increments of $100,000 up to $1 million.
Medical Payments
The Medical Payments section of the policy provides protection for reasonable medical, ambulance and hospital costs should someone be injured while in, upon, boarding or leaving your boat.
Uninsured Boat Owners Coverage

The Uninsured Boat Owners section of the policy provides coverage for injuries caused by an accident that you are entitled to recover from the owner or operator of an uninsured boat or "hit-and-run" boat.

Commercial Towing and Assistance enables you to be reimbursed for the reasonable costs incurred when you break down at sea and need a commercial tow to port.

These are some of the basic coverages you should look for when purchasing boat insurance. As a market leader in the boat insurance industry, United Marine Underwriters offers broad coverages at great rates for virtually any type of vessel.

Skimping on Insurance Could Spell Trouble
by Capt. Fred Davis
Boat insurance can be confusing. Boats may be insured for various coverage – in various ways – with various companies.
Boat owners need to take the time to question and understand the insurance they are purchasing. In most cases, boat values (even small boats) are in the thousands of dollars. A few dollars saved on an insurance policy could jeopardize needed coverage. If your agent cannot thoroughly explain the coverage, ask to speak to a company representative who can interpret the small print.

Boat owners should be aware of several aspects of boat policy coverage. Most, if not all, policies state, "It is the responsibility of the owner to immediately take all necessary action to protect the property from further damage when his boat is in peril."
I have encountered insurance companies that would not cover the expense of recovery of a vessel because the vessel itself was not damaged. The insurance companies did not consider the fact that had the owner not taken protective action the vessel could have been a total loss.

A service often questioned is removal from grounding. Some companies refer to removal from a hard grounding as towing. Towing could actually severely damage a grounded vessel. Others interpret, as they should, a hard grounding as salvage. To avoid further damage, special action is required.

In most cases of wreck removal, a vessel owner is held responsible for the removal of a wreck or any debris.
Some insurance companies pay all the cost of wreck removal; others do not cover wreck removal at all. Some may pay off a total loss claim on the boat but leave an owner responsible for the removal or any further liability caused by a wreck.

If a wreck breaks up and its debris floats in the path of another vessel, causing damage to that vessel, liability can be extreme.
In recent years, towing coverage has been added to most policies (usually to the nearest harbor). You need to carefully check your policy, however, because some companies offer no coverage for towing, especially for small boats.

Towing coverage is important, because the Coast Guard no longer offers assistance towing if there is no danger to lives or property. The cost of towing by a commercial tower averages $100 to $150 per hour from the time the tow gets under way until the tow boat returns to its dock (port to port).

Marine insurance coverage involves many other variables. Only too often, the insured has no idea what coverage they have until a claim occurs and it’s too late to change.

Insurance coverage is not an item you should skimp on. Pennies saved on a cheap policy could cost you your boat if you encounter a major claim. In addition, you could be left with a big bill to add to your problems.

If you own a high-priced vessel, even though it’s only a runabout, it would be wiser to purchase a yacht policy. Avoid adding it to your homeowners insurance.

Many boaters spend a lot of money on a boat, then they buy the cheapest insurance they can find thinking they won't need it. They may feel secure, because they are well schooled on safe boating and proper navigation, but the unforeseen can happen and good insurance provides peace of mind as you enjoy your watercraft.
